Snape Village
Since Roman times, this village has been a small port dealing with grain and coal. In 1862, the remains of an Anglo-Saxon ship (AD 625) was unearthed here. Snape Maltings are a unique collection of 19th C. maltings, set beside the River Alde. They were established by the local Garrett family to process barley, and now house shops, galleries and the world-famous concert hall.
Snape Maltings
The Maltings is a collection of granaries & malthouses nestling beside the River Alde. It contains shops, galleries & restaurants fill the old buildings. In 1967 the Snape Maltings Concert Hall was opened as a venue for music events & festivals. It was the brainchild of Benjamin Britten & Peter Pears.
Snape Maltings hosts a number of annual event including the Aldeburgh Festival (June), Aldeburgh Antique and Fine Art Fair (July), Snape Prom (August), Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival (September),
The Barbara Hepworth Family Man Sculpture
The Family of Man is a sculptural project that remained unfinished at Barbara Hepworth’s death. Created in 1973 it is made up of nine large bronze pieces. Although they are abstract forms each of the pieces is named as a character: ancestors, parents, children, bride and groom.
Two complete sets of the characters were cast. The complete set of the Family of Man group is part of the permanent collection at Yorkshire Sculpture Park where it is sited on a grassy bank set against trees and the sky.
The second set was dispersed with a group of three pieces being set up in Barbara Hepworth’s home town of Wakefield, and a second group of three figures, which can be seen here, at Snape Maltings.
