Orford

Steeped in history, this attractive small town is overlooked by its 12th century castle keep built by Henry VII for coastal defence. From the top, there are panoramic views over the town and marshes. Brick and timber buildings line the streets to the little quayside, where there are boat trips to the mysterious Orfordness (a shingle spit). The town is noted for its oysters.

Havergate Island

Opportunities to visit Havergate Island are rare. This splendid nature reserve is owned and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and is famous for having played a major role in the conservation of the Avocet in Britain. But the site is much more than this - a large colony of nesting gulls, super displays of wild flowers in spring and early summer, migrant wading birds in late summer, terrific views of the surrounding countryside and thousands of waders and ducks in winter months, most notably Black tailed Godwit, Avocet, Wigeon, Teal and Pintail.
