Thorpeness
The village of Thorpeness is unusual in that it was created in the early 1900s as a model seaside village. Scottish landowner and playwright, G. Stuart Ogilvie, bought the old fishing hamlet of Thorpe and proceeded to turn it into the village as it is known today.
The House in the Clouds
One of its most well known, and unique, attractions is the village water tower. As there was no mains water supply a tower had to be built but this was deemed to be unsightly so it was disguised as a house, the tank being on the top and an actual house underneath. It was firstly lived in by the family of Mrs. Mason, a children's poet, who wrote a poem inspired by her house called "The House in the Clouds". Ever since, the tower has been called by this name, and is still lived in today.
